The copy edit is a line by line edit, not usually concerned with the content of the book. The focus of the copy editor is spelling, punctuation, grammar and style constancy. This is usually carried out on the author’s double spaced draft, with the editor putting the corrections or suggestions in the blank line above the text, and corresponding notions in the margins.
The editor will use a set of special marks or symbols, which are recognised throughout the printing trade, they indicate instructions such as ‘delete, ‘transpose’ or ‘italicise’. |

The proofreader works on the final typeset pages ‘page proofs’, the proofreader’s job is to pick up last minute previously missed mistakes; errors in typesetting and layout, grammar and punctuation, and a variation of in-house style. Basically the proofreader's job is a continuation of the copy editors job. |
